Luxurious Uzvar: Traditional Ukrainian Fruit Compote
Uzvar is a traditional Ukrainian fruit compote made from a variety of dried fruits, typically enjoyed during the Christmas season and other festive occasions. This drink is both sweet and refreshing, offering a delightful blend of flavors. Fruits like apples, pears, prunes, and apricots impart a natural sweetness, while honey adds an extra layer of richness. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also rich in vitamins and nutrients, making it a healthy festive treat.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup dried apples
- 1 cup dried pears
- 1 cup dried prunes
- 1 cup dried apricots
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 1/3 cup honey
- 2 liters water
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
- 2-3 cloves (optional)
Instructions:
- Rinse all the dried fruits properly under cold running water to remove any impurities.
- In a large pot, bring the 2 liters of water to a boil.
- Add the dried apples, pears, prunes, apricots, and raisins to the boiling water.
- If using, add the cinnamon stick and cloves for added flavor.
- Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 20-25 minutes until the fruits become tender and their flavors meld into the liquid.
- Add the honey, stirring until it dissolves completely into the compote.
- Turn off the heat and let the uzvar cool. As it cools, the flavors will continue to develop.
- Once cooled, strain the uzvar to separate the liquid from the fruits. The fruits can be eaten separately or added back into the drink.
- Transfer the uzvar to a pitcher and refrigerate for a few hours to chill before serving. It can be enjoyed warm as well if preferred.
Serving: Serve the uzvar chilled or at room temperature, garnished with a slice of lemon or a sprig of fresh mint. This delightful drink is perfect for holiday gatherings or as a refreshing beverage on a warm day.
