Luxurious Uzvar: Traditional Ukrainian Fruit Compote

Uzvar is a traditional Ukrainian fruit compote made from a variety of dried fruits, typically enjoyed during the Christmas season and other festive occasions. This drink is both sweet and refreshing, offering a delightful blend of flavors. Fruits like apples, pears, prunes, and apricots impart a natural sweetness, while honey adds an extra layer of richness. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also rich in vitamins and nutrients, making it a healthy festive treat.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried apples
  • 1 cup dried pears
  • 1 cup dried prunes
  • 1 cup dried apricots
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 2 liters water
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • 2-3 cloves (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse all the dried fruits properly under cold running water to remove any impurities.
  2. In a large pot, bring the 2 liters of water to a boil.
  3. Add the dried apples, pears, prunes, apricots, and raisins to the boiling water.
  4. If using, add the cinnamon stick and cloves for added flavor.
  5. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 20-25 minutes until the fruits become tender and their flavors meld into the liquid.
  6. Add the honey, stirring until it dissolves completely into the compote.
  7. Turn off the heat and let the uzvar cool. As it cools, the flavors will continue to develop.
  8. Once cooled, strain the uzvar to separate the liquid from the fruits. The fruits can be eaten separately or added back into the drink.
  9. Transfer the uzvar to a pitcher and refrigerate for a few hours to chill before serving. It can be enjoyed warm as well if preferred.

Serving: Serve the uzvar chilled or at room temperature, garnished with a slice of lemon or a sprig of fresh mint. This delightful drink is perfect for holiday gatherings or as a refreshing beverage on a warm day.
