Crispy Duck with Hoisin Sauce

Crispy Duck with Hoisin Sauce is a delightful Asian-inspired dish featuring succulent duck with crispy skin, paired with a rich and savory hoisin sauce. This dish is perfect for festive dinners or special occasions, offering a rich blend of flavors that are sure to impress your guests.

Ingredients:
1 whole duck, approximately 4-5 lbs
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
4 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon sesame oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece of ginger, minced
Spring onions and cucumber strips, for serving
Mandarin pancakes or steamed bao buns, for serving

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Rinse the duck under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Trim any excess fat from the cavity and around the neck.

2. Season the duck all over with salt, freshly ground black pepper, and Chinese five-spice powder. Make sure to rub the seasoning into the skin and inside the cavity.

3. Prick the duck skin all over with a fork, being careful not to pierce the meat. This helps to render out the fat and create a crispy skin.

4. Place the duck on a rack in a roasting pan. Roast in the preheated oven for 1 hour.

5. Increase the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue roasting the duck for another hour, or until the skin is crispy and golden brown. The internal temperature of the duck should reach 165°F (74°C).

6. While the duck is roasting, prepare the hoisin sauce. In a small saucepan, combine the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is heated through and well blended.

7. Remove the duck from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before carving. Carve the duck into thin slices.

8. Serve the duck with the prepared hoisin sauce, spring onions, cucumber strips, and your choice of mandarin pancakes or steamed bao buns. Allow guests to assemble their own wraps by spreading a little hoisin sauce on a pancake or bun, adding a few slices of duck, and topping with cucumber and spring onions.

Enjoy this crispy, flavorful duck with hoisin sauce as the centerpiece of your meal.
