Classic Salisbury Steak with a Rich Mushroom Gravy
Salisbury Steak is a comfort food classic: tender beef patties that are well-seasoned, pan-seared to perfection, and then simmered in a savory mushroom gravy. This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles, making it a hearty and satisfying meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/3 cup bread crumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp cold water
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
- Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become golden brown, about 5 minutes.
- Add the beef broth to the skillet, stirring to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring the broth to a simmer.
- Reduce the heat to medium, and gradually stir in the heavy cream. Allow the mixture to simmer and thicken slightly.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the skillet, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
- Return the patties to the skillet and spoon some of the gravy over them. Cover and simmer for another 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
- Serve the Salisbury Steaks topped with the rich mushroom gravy, and enjoy with your favorite sides.
