Classic Salisbury Steak with a Rich Mushroom Gravy

Salisbury Steak is a comfort food classic: tender beef patties that are well-seasoned, pan-seared to perfection, and then simmered in a savory mushroom gravy. This dish pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes or buttered egg noodles, making it a hearty and satisfying meal.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp cold water

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, milk, egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly incorporated.
  2. Form the mixture into oval-shaped patties, about 1/2-inch thick.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become golden brown, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the beef broth to the skillet, stirring to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring the broth to a simmer.
  6. Reduce the heat to medium, and gradually stir in the heavy cream. Allow the mixture to simmer and thicken slightly.
  7. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the skillet, stirring constantly, until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
  8. Return the patties to the skillet and spoon some of the gravy over them. Cover and simmer for another 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through.
  9. Serve the Salisbury Steaks topped with the rich mushroom gravy, and enjoy with your favorite sides.
