Perfectly Delightful Popeye’s Spinach and Potato Gratin: A Comforting Cheesy Casserole
Spinach and Potato Gratin is a delicious, comforting dish that brings together the earthy flavor of spinach with the creamy, hearty goodness of potatoes in a luscious cheesy sauce. This recipe is inspired by Popeye the Sailor’s love for spinach and takes it to a whole new level with layers of tender potatoes and a rich cheese sauce that will leave everyone asking for seconds.
Ingredients:
– 3 large potatoes, thinly sliced
– 2 cups fresh spinach, chopped
– 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
– 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
– 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon butter
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
– 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
– 1 tablespoon olive oil
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter to prevent sticking.
2. Prepare the potatoes and spinach: Thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or a sharp knife. Wash and dry the spinach, then chop it up.
3. Make the cheese sauce: In a saucepan over medium heat, add the olive oil and minced garlic. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant. Stir in the heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then remove from heat.
4. Layer the gratin: Spread a third of the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Top with one-third of the chopped spinach and one-third of the grated Gruyère cheese. Repeat these layers two more times, finishing with a layer of Gruyère cheese on top.
5. Add the sauce: Pour the cream and garlic mixture evenly over the layered potatoes and spinach. Make sure the sauce penetrates through all the layers.
6. Top with Parmesan: Sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the gratin for an extra cheesy and golden-brown crust.
7. Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is bubbly and golden.
8. Rest and serve: Allow the gratin to rest for 10 minutes before serving to let the flavors meld together.
Serve this delightful Popeye’s Spinach and Potato Gratin as a side dish or a main course. It pairs wonderfully with roasted meats, chicken, or a fresh green salad. Enjoy!
